Coursework

This page contains all of the courses I took to complete my Masters of Arts in Education through Michigan State University with concentrations in literacy and special education. Next to each course you will also find the instructor(s) name(s) and a short description the course. I enjoyed my time at Michigan State and truly will miss my instructors and their classes. The program has been very rewarding and challenging (in a good way!). 

TE 848: Methods of Writing Instruction

Spring 2011 Instructors: J. Certo, L. Hawkins

 

For methods of writing instructions, it shows the process of pre-writing through drafting and editing using a hands on approach. The examples below are of my final project in the course. The examples are of a poetry lesson I created for my kindergarten classroom, and a comprehensive paper describing the process, outcome and research I used to create my lesson. 







TE 831: Teaching Subject Matter with Technology

Summer 2011 Instructor: A. Horton

 

In teaching subject matter with technology, we used a variety of technologies that can be integrated into the classroom. The final project for this course was to use one of many technologies we were introduced to and repurpose it into a lesson. Below you will find my paper explaining the technology I chose (VoiceThread) as well as the lesson I repurposed to use this technology. 

ED 800: Concepts of Educational Inquiry

Summer 2011 Instructor: S. Weiland

 

Concepts of educational inquiry is an introductory course for the master's program. It uses educational inquiry to analyze and pose many questions about education using books, articles, movies, etc. The link below is my final paper discussing the area of study from the course which challenged my views of education. CEP 850: Technology and Literacy for Students with Mild Disabilities 

Summer 2011 Instructors: C. Okolo, M. Randel

 

The technology and literacy for students with mild disabilities course offers an exploration of using different technologies, in regards to literacy, in the classroom to accommodate students with mild disabilities. Below you will find my final paper discussing the technology I chose to use to help improve the literacy skills for three of my students with mild disabilities. 



CEP 843: Autism Spectrum Disorders: Characteristics and Educational Implications

Fall 2011 Instructors: S. Ferreri, S. Strasberger

 

Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a course that takes a general look into Autism and its many facets. Below you will see three different assignments for this course. The first one is a book review on a book about Autism. The second is a review of three articles in regards to Autism. The final one is a transition plan for my student with Autism. 

TE 846: Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners

Spring 2012 Instructor: G. Troia

 

Accommodating differences in literacy learners course focuses on differentiating literacy instruction to meet the needs of all literacy learners. Below you will find my case study where I analyzed a student who struggled with literacy. I came up with lessons for learning decoding and segmenting strategies, gave the lessons, and looked at the students progress. In my case study you can find my written findings, examples of tests given, etc.   

CEP 801A: Collaboration and Consultation in Special Education 

Spring 2012 Instructors: E. Englert, T. Meriage

 

Collaboration and consultation in special education looks at collaboration among teachers, parents, and community agencies to help students with disabilities. Below are two examples of course work. The first is a academic intervention plan that I created with another teacher in my building. It was designed to help one of her struggling students. The second is a PowerPoint showcasing a teaching project I created for myself and another teacher to use on a struggling student.  

TE 843: Secondary Reading Assessment and Instruction

Summer 2012 Instructor: D. Hartman

 

This secondary reading assessment and instruction course looks at and analyzes the language, literacy, and thinking in secondary schools. Below is an example of a project analyzing the reading habits of fourth grade students and discussing my findings. 

CEP 866: Psychoeducational Interventions for Children and Youth

Summer 2012 Instructors: M. Diemer, J. Park

 

Psychoeducational interventions for children and youth course reviews and evaluates intervention programs for at-risk youth. Below is a presentation and an outline of an anti-bullying intervention my group created as our final project.

 

ED 870: Capstone Seminar

Spring 2013 Instructor: M. Koehler

 

In the capstone seminar course we are asked to reflect upon our learning experiences in our online masters program. We also created an online portfolio showcasing the masters program and ourselves as educators. Our peers reviewed our portfolios as we created them.
